10. Federal university of technology, Akure


The university which was created in 1981 by former president Shehu Shagari has risen to be one of the best universities of science and technology in Nigeria.
Its degree program runs for five years except for architecture which is 6 years.
Today, the university runs academic disciplines and research across seven different schools and has over forty academic departments.
It is currently ranked 3365th in the world.

9. University of Ilorin 

Unilorin is located in Ilorin, Kwara State and was established by a decree of the Military government in 1975.
The main campus houses the Faculties of Science, Engineering and Technology, Agriculture, Education, Law, Arts, Business, Social Sciences, and an extensive post-graduate school.
It has a population of 20,000 students and is ranked 3225th in the world.

8. Federal university of agriculture, Abeokuta


The Federal Government established FUNAAB in 1988 when four universities of technology that were earlier merged in 1984 were demerged.
The university has 179 academic programmes made up of 44 undergraduate programmes, 135 graduate programmes and 56 Doctorate degree programmes.
It has a population of 15,095 undergraduates and 1,640 postgraduates and is currently ranked 3192th in the world. The university has gained prominence in social circles due to its meteoric rise in students buying Lexus and Benz rides.

7. Ahmadu bello university 



Founded on the 4th of October 1962, the Ahmadu Bello University is located in Zaria, Kaduna State and is named after the Sardauna of Sokoto – Alhaji Sir Ahmadu Bello, the first premier of Northern Nigeria.
ABU runs a wide variety of undergraduate and graduate programs; including its own Teaching Hospital, which is one of the largest in the country.
The university boasts of one of the highest amount of graduates turned political leaders such as former president of Nigeria, Umaru Musa Yar’Adua, former Vice Presidents Namadi Sambo and Atiku Abubakar, and also a host of former governors.
It is currently ranked 2980th in the world.

6. University of Lagos (UNILAG)

The University of Lagos or UNILAG as it is popularly called is located in Lagos State. The first campus is at Akoka, Yaba while the medical campus is at Idi-Araba, Surulere.
It was established in 1962 and in 2012, former President Goodluck Jonathan attempted to rename it Moshood Abiola University – MAULAG.
It is one of the most competitive in the country in terms of admissions but it still has approximately 57,000 students.
It has faculties of Arts, Law, Sciences, Engineering, Medical sciences etc, and is currently ranked 2776th in the world.

5. Federal university of technology, minna


The Federal University of Technology, FUTMINNA is a designated Centre of Excellence in Biotechnology and Genetic Engineering and has a core competence in the development of vaccines and drugs.
The university was established in 1983, and the first Vice-Chancellor was Professor J.O. Ndagi who served from 1983 to 1990.
FUTMINNA ranked 2538th in the world.

4. Obafemi awolowo university,ile ice


Established in 1961, OAU as it is commonly called is located in Ile-Ife, Osun State. The university started out with five faculties – Agriculture, Arts, Economics, Social Studies, Law and Sciences. Eight other faculties have since been added, including Pharmacy and Engineering.
It has a population of about 35,000 students excluding the postgraduate programs. It is currently ranked 2239th in the world.

3. University of Nigeria, nsukka

Once known as the University of Biafra, the University of Nigeria is located in Nsukka, Enugu State and was established in 1955 by the then Premier of the Eastern Region – Dr. Nnamdi Azikwe.
UNN has 15 faculties and 102 academic departments; it offers 82 undergraduate programs and 211 postgraduate programs. It is currently ranked 2221st in the world.

Covenant University is located in Ota, Ogun State and was founded in October 2002, by the presiding Bishop David Oyedepo of Faith Tabernacle, aka Winners Chapel.
Widely regarded as the best private university in Nigeria, its academic programme is run in 4 colleges namely, College of Science and Technology, College of Engineering, College of Leadership Development Studies, and the College of Business and Social Sciences.
It also runs a postgraduate program, has a population of about 15000 students and is currently ranked 2037th in the world.

1. University of Ibadan (UI)


The University of Ibadan, popularly known as UI is the oldest university in Nigeria. and was established in 1948. It is located in Ibadan, Oyo state.
Besides the College of Medicine, there are 11 other faculties including the faculty of Arts, Law and Technology and 33,841 students. It became the first Nigerian university to make top 1000 in the Times Higher Education rankings. It is currently ranked 1032nd in the world.
This ranking was done by Webometrics which is the largest academic ranking of higher education institutions.
It makes use of Cybermetrics Lab which provides reliable, multidimensional, updated and useful information about the performance of universities from all over the world based on their web presence and impact.
